Smithfield MTB Park near Cairns, Australia

(The Cairns website is down so this map is from elsewhere.)
The Smithfield Mountain Bike Park is world class. Often the host of downhill and cross country races. It is open to the public and free to use.

I was there on weekdays and weekends for riding and never had the feeling it was crowded. However it is often closed to the general public when people are racing. This can be a problem for the casual rider only in the area for a day or two. Get in contact with the Cairns MTB Club if you have questions or want to know if there is a race going on when you're in town.

Same map as above. Took a picture of it with my phone
when we got to the trails. There aren't too many signs like
these at Smithfield so take a pic or bring a map.
There is plenty of parking around Smithfield but I found a good place to start was here. (-16.819501, 145.683008) A small parking lot on McGreggor Rd just past the university. There's a small bump at the parking lot which is fun to play around on before or after a ride. Pines trail is only a few meters from the lot as well so you don't have to ride far to get to the trailhead.

I sadly didn't take any pictures while I was riding there. I was too busy riding and crashing. I actually crashed so hard on my way down Barramundi Trail that I broke my helmet. Luckily, that's the only thing I broke.

The top image the helmet looks OK but really isn't.
Bottom image shows the foam and hard outer shell is cracked.
